The Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company is a US-based insurance and financial services company headquartered in Columbus in the state of Ohio . It is one of the largest insurance companies in the country and is on the Fortune 500 list of the largest US companies with annual sales of $ 47.3 billion . Nationwide has a large number of subsidiaries focused on domestic property and casualty, life and retirement, wealth management and investment.

history

The company was founded in 1926 by the Ohio Farm Bureau under the name Farm Bureau Mutual to offer auto insurance to farmers in the state of Ohio who until then had to pay the same insurance premiums despite having a lower rate of traffic accidents than city dwellers. In 1928, Farm Bureau Mutual expanded to West Virginia , followed by Maryland , Delaware , Vermont and North Carolina . Farm Bureau Mutual began insuring residents of small towns in 1931 and residents of larger towns in 1934. Farm Bureau Mutual also started offering fire damage insurance in 1934 and later expanded into other areas.

In 1955, Farm Bureau Mutual changed its name to Nationwide Insurance, a name by which it is commonly known today. In the next 10 years, Nationwide expanded into Oregon . It finally expanded to all parts of the United States by 1965.

The advertising slogan Nationwide is on your Side was first introduced to the public in 1965, composed by the well-known Jingle writer Steve Karmen, and set to music in 1969.
