Native American Journalists Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Native American Journalists Association is an Oklahoma- based association of American Indian journalists located on the campus of the University of Oklahoma at Norman . The journalists' association focuses on the exchange of information between the indigenous population and the rest of society.

The association sees its roots in the founding of North America's first Native American newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix, in 1828. In 1983, 30 Native American journalists gathered at Pennsylvania State University to advise on how to improve the situation of indigenous media companies and their operators. In 1984 another meeting in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma area passed the formation of a statewide organization, initially called the Native American Press Association (NAPA). In 1990 the association was given its current name.

In 2010, Rhonda LeValdo succeeded her predecessor Ronnie Washines as President. The current president (as of 2018) is Bryan Pollard.
