The  nature reserve Barra del Colorado  ( Spanish Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Barra del Colorado ) is a protected area in  Costa Rica . It is the largest wildlife sanctuary in Costa Rica.

The area is located in the province of  Limón , in northeast Costa Rica. The river Río San Juan forms the border in the north, where the area joins  Nicaragua  . Barra del Colorado is 81,177 hectares (including the border area with Nicaragua 90,400 hectares). It consists of coastal areas, lakes, swamps, forests and small elevations, but not higher than 219 meters above sea level. The 119 meter high volcano Tortuguero (Cerro Tortuguero) is located directly on the southeast border of the nature reserve. Its crater was formed around 1.8 billion years ago.

In addition to the San Juan, the rivers Río Colorado and Río Chirripó meander through the wildlife sanctuary on their way to the Atlantic.

The Tortuguero National Park borders in the south  . Barra del Colorado can only be reached by plane or boat.

Flora and fauna

The nature reserve is home to many animal and plant species. Manatees , caimans , various species of monkeys, tapirs , three-toed sloths and strawberry frogs live here . Bird species such as toucans , white buzzards and numerous water birds can also be seen in the reserve . Due to the many waterways you can also find pike , tarpon , blue sunfish or rainbow perch in the protected area or the adjacent marine areas.

The flora is mainly characterized by marshland,  mangroves  and lagoons.
