The Shaumari Nature Reserve ( Arabic محمية الشومري, DMG Maḥmiyyat aš-Šaumarī ) is a nature reserve of the IUCN category biotope / species protection area with management near the settlement al-Azraq 100 kilometers east of Amman .
history
The reserve was created in 1975 as the first nature reserve in Jordan by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature as a breeding center for endangered or locally extinct wildlife.
fauna
The 22 square kilometer nature reserve is a shelter for some of the rarest animal species in the Middle East. A total of 193 animal species were sighted. The oryx , African ostrich , onager (a subspecies of the Asiatic wild ass ) and some gazelle species depicted on many local Byzantine mosaics from the 6th century have seen populations increase following threats from habitat destruction and hunting . The oryx and onager can often be seen roaming free in their large desert grassland enclosure, the ostrich and gazelle species can be seen in their own fenced-in areas.
