Navidad Nuestra

Navidad Nuestra (German: Our Christmas ) is a Christmas cantata by the Argentine composer Ariel Ramírez and lyricist Félix Luna . The Christmas story is transferred to the South American cultural area, for example the cantata is orchestrated with South American musical instruments.

The cantata consists of six songs, each of which is composed to the rhythm of a different South American dance:

  1. La anunciación (“The Annunciation”), the angels Gabriel and Mary -  Chamamé
  2. La peregrinación (“The Pilgrimage”), Joseph and Mary looking for a hostel - Huella
  3. El nacimiento ("The Birth") - Vidala catamarqueña
  4. Los pastores ("The Shepherds") - Chaya
  5. Los reyes magos ("The Holy Kings") - Takirari
  6. La huida ("The Flight") - Vidala tucumana

Not only the melodies, but also the texts written by Félix Luna put the Christmas story in a South American world: Mary and Joseph travel through the icy pampas with thorns and nettles, the shepherds come from all over Argentina and bring the child small wheels of cheese, basil and thyme , the kings bring a white poncho made of real alpaca as a gift .

Ramírez and Luna wrote the work in the fall of 1963.

Navidad nuestra has been interpreted by singers such as Mercedes Sosa and José Carreras, as well as numerous other Latin American singers. The cantata is also very popular with Latin American amateur choirs.
