The Navoi Theater is a theater in the Uzbek capital Tashkent that is used for opera and ballet performances .

Namesake

The theater is named after the art patron , poet, builder and politician Mir ʿAli Schir Nawāʾ , who worked in the 15th century and is considered a national hero in Uzbekistan.

building

Construction of the theater began in 1939 according to plans by Alexei Shusev. In 1942 work had to be interrupted due to the Second World War, but could be continued in 1944 and completed in 1945 with the help of Japanese prisoners of war. The building is located in the center of Tashkent and is adorned with Uzbek symbols, which can also be found in cities such as Samarkand and Bukhara . In the entrance hall of the building, chandeliers weighing more than three tons illuminate the room. The theater can accommodate 1,400 spectators.

program

In the theater, operas by Uzbek composers, but also European classics by composers such as Verdi and Bizet are performed. The ballet ensemble, whose dancers have already performed on the world's major stages, is particularly well known. Ballets such as Swan Lake and Don Quixote are performed , as well as ballets that are based on Uzbek folk music.
