Lena Bloch

Lena Bloch (* 31 January 1971 in Moscow ) is a native of the Soviet Union, the United States living jazz musician ( saxophone ).

Live and act

Bloch emigrated from the Soviet Union to Israel in 1989 and then lived for twelve years in the Netherlands and Germany, where she completed her first degree at the Cologne University of Music in 1999 . She then took part in the Jazz Workshop in Banff with Joe Lovano and Kenny Werner . She moved to the United States, where she received a postgraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst ; In 2008 she obtained a master's degree in composition. Since then she has lived in Brooklyn, where she was active in the local jazz scene.

Since 2001 she took lessons from Lee Konitz ; she played u. a. with Tristano students Connie Crothers , Ted Brown , Harvey Diamond , Joe Solomon , Charles Sibirsky , and with musicians of the younger generation such as Roberta Piket , Dan Tepfer , Brad Linde and Sarah Hughes . She also appeared in the Four Extraordinary Women in Jazz program with Connie Crothers and in a concert for Lester Young's 100th birthday at the Smalls Jazz Club . In 2000 the first recordings were made with the Steve Reid Quartet ( Live in Europe ).

Between 2008 and 2014 she was a member of the Vishnu Wood Quartet ; she also worked with Arturo O'Farrill , George Schuller , Putter Smith , Bill Wurtzel and Scott Wendholt . In 2014 Bloch appeared as a soloist with the New York Chamber Players Orchestra in a concert for alto saxophone and orchestra (composed by Eric Koenig ) in the Merkin Concert Hall.

In addition, Bloch led a quartet that included guitarist Dave Miller, bassist Cameron Brown and drummer Billy Mintz and with whom the album Feathery (2014) was created. It received positive reviews and a. in New York City Jazz Record , France Musique, Canadian Audiophile and in Music Charts Magazine. After Miller's departure, the pianist Russ Lossing joined the Lena Bloch Quartet ; In 2017 the album Heart Knows ( Fresh Sound Records ) was released. She has taught woodwind instruments and improvisation on the Jazz Education Network, New Music USA, and Chamber Music America.
