Ted Brown (saxophonist)
Ted Brown (actually Theodore George Brown , * 1. December 1927 in Rochester , New York ) is an American jazz - tenor saxophonist .
Brown first learned the banjo, violin, clarinet and tenor saxophone. In 1942 his family moved to Southern California, where his father worked as a pilot in the Navy. After high school, in the mid-1940s, he joined the army and was stationed in Virginia, where he often went to the jazz clubs on 52nd Street . Brown lived in Hollywood in 1947/48 . From 1948 to 1955 Brown learned and worked with Lennie Tristano in New York, among others together with Lee Konitz . In early 1956 first participation in a recording (together with other Tristano students), Ronnie Balls All About Ronnie ( Savoy Records , 1956). Played with Warne Marsh and Art Pepper in Hollywood in 1956/57 ; then again as a freelance musician in New York.
At the end of the 1980s he tried a comeback with the record Free Spirit ( Criss Cross Jazz ) in the style of Lester Young , which disappointed, however. At the end of the 1990s he worked again with Lee Konitz.
