Ndere Island is a Kenyan inland island in Winamgolf (formerly Kavirondo Gulf ) in the northeast of Lake Victoria , only 190 meters from the north shore of the lake and 26 km southwest of the city of Kisumu . The island became the Ndere Island National Reserve in November 1986 ; it has been uninhabited since then. In Luo, other means something like meeting place ; first settlers in the region who drove up the Nile use the island as a resting point.

Fish eagles , sailors , hippos and Nile crocodiles are native to the island .
