The Ndome also initiation shield is a ceremonial protective weapon from Kenya .

description

The ndome is made of wood. It has an oval shape and is decorated with traditional paintings and carvings on the front and back, in a zigzag pattern. The handle is also made of wood and is made from one piece with the shield. It is used by the Kikuyu ethnic group as a ceremonial object in the initiation rites ( kikuju. Irua ) of young men and is worn on the upper arm. Initiation takes place between the ages of 15 and 18. During the rites dances, they hold the shield over their heads. By wearing the shield, they attain adult and warrior status. During circumcision , boys are expected to undergo this non- anesthetic operation without showing the slightest pain. Initiation always takes place in groups (kikuyu. Mwanake ). They are grouped into age groups and each of these groups is given a name (kikuyu. Rika ). The members of these groups behave like brothers to one another and also go into battle together.
