Nebulus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nebulus , in North America Tower Toppler, also subline (Italy), Castelian, Kyorochan country is a Jump 'n' Run game from 1987. It was released for home computers and game consoles. The original developer was John M. Phillips under the umbrella of Triffix Entertainment Inc. and the publishers Hewson Consultants and US Gold . The game is still available today, for example via the C64 DTV or as a download for an emulation in the Wii game console . There are still some free clones .

The movement of the game is extraordinary: the character always remains in the center of the screen while the tower moves up and down or rotates around itself. The 3D effect implemented when the tower is rotated is a graphically outstanding feature of the game.

The original version of the game was praised by the critics, especially the C64 version, which was awarded the gold medal by the British magazine ZZAP! 64. In the 1990s, Nebulus 2 on the Amiga and the Atari ST was followed by a much less well-known sequel.

Game action

The hero of the game is a character named Pogo , who can run and make short jumps. Furthermore, it is possible for her to shoot down some of the obstacles.

The aim of the game is to climb each of the towers protruding from the water within a given time. In the original version there were eight each, on two different missions. Points are mainly awarded for the height gained while climbing the tower, for shooting down obstacles and for catching fish during the submarine trip to the next tower. There are new lives for the points achieved.

The towers are surrounded on the outside by step plates on which one can move. Some of these platforms are unstable and will break if stepped on. Others can be shot down, for example to clear the way, or they lead a life of their own - Pogo slips uncontrollably on them. There are also elevators with which you can go up and down. In many places, corridors lead right through the tower.

In addition to the traps and difficulties that the tower itself already offers, there are numerous other obstacles that you have to avoid, such as jumping balls. If he touches such an obstacle, Pogo loses his balance and falls a few floors down or, if he is unlucky, straight into the water. A fall into the water, like running out of time, leads to the loss of a life.

A particular obstacle is an object that appears from time to time and that flies across the screen from the left or right and does not follow the rotation of the tower, which often makes it difficult to evade. In some places you have to take advantage of this object in order to reach otherwise inaccessible parts of the tower by deliberately falling.

Anecdotes

  • The game was named Castellian through a mistake by the developer . Actually, Castellan was intended, which means something like "the keeper of the castle".
  • In the same month in which the game was released, it was planned to include a demo in the magazine Zzap! 64 via data cartridge. Due to an error when creating the master copy, the full version ended up on the data carrier, so that all readers received this full version free of charge.

Derivative works

The name of the start file of the game Perestroika was toppler.exe and the design of the corresponding game figure was very similar to that of Tower Toppler.

There are clones of the game for z. B. Linux or the iPhone .

Tower Toppler GPL v2
Tower Toppler GPL v2

A clone variant that is subject to the free GPL v2 license is that of Andreas Röver. The variant had seen the light of the public verifiably since at least February 2003 and saw its last official release in July 2007. Despite the lack of up-to-date binaries and Röver's withdrawal from the project, development and bug fixes are evidently continuing. The basis is an independently developed code base , a collection of graphics and sounds and a level editor. The entire project is now based on the SDL game library and has already been successfully tested on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and BeOS. Several Linux distributions have included the package in their media and update system. The development itself is proceeding on the SourceForge platform under the keyword "toppler", whereby "Tower Toppler" is used several times for the self-designation.
