Nedo Fiano

Nedo Fiano (born April 22, 1925 in Florence ) is an Italian survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp and one of the most active contemporary witnesses in the country.

biography

As a result of the entry into force of racist legislation in Italy in 1938, Fiano had to drop out of school at the age of 13 due to his Jewish beliefs. However, he was able to continue his education at a school that was set up independently within the Jewish community of Florence .

On February 6, 1944, he was arrested by the Italian secret police OVRA and imprisoned in Florence. He was then transferred to the Fossoli transit camp with eleven other family members .

Fiano and his relatives were deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp on May 16, 1944 , where they arrived on May 23. His inmate number was A-5405. The transport from Fossoli had the number 46 (Tibaldi) and comprised 581 people.

On April 11, 1945, he was liberated by American troops in the Buchenwald concentration camp , where he had previously been transferred. He is the only survivor of his entire family.

After regaining freedom, Fiano graduated from Luigi Bocconi University of Economics in Milan and became a manager . In 1985 he also founded a management consultancy office .

Since his liberation, Fiano's life has always been shaped by his numerous activities as a witness to the Holocaust , especially with young people. In 2003 he published under the title A-5405. Il coraggio di vivere ( "The courage to live" ) his biography also in book form. Fiano has also acted as a consultant for Roberto Benigni's film Life is Beautiful and has contributed to numerous documentaries .
