Negative peace

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Negative peace is a concept by the Norwegian peace researcher Johan Galtung , which he developed around 1971. What is meant by this is a peace that exists through the absence of direct personal violence, especially the absence of organized use of military force.

The goals of negative peace are, on the one hand, to end violent conflict, ceasefire / rest, peace treaties and permanent security for the population. The realization of negative peace, as a conditio sine qua non, is an essential prerequisite for positive peace , which is defined by the extensive reduction of structural violence .
