Neil Ashcroft

Neil W. Ashcroft (born November 27, 1938 in London ) is a British solid-state physicist.

Ashcroft studied at the University of New Zealand (Bachelor in 1958) and received his PhD from Cambridge University in 1964 . He was a post-doc at the University of Chicago and from 1965 at Cornell University , where he became a professor in 1975. From 1990 he was Horace White Professor there. In 2006 he retired. From 1979 to 1984 he was director of the Laboratory for Atomic and Solid State Physics, from 1997 to 2000 of the Center for Material Research and from 1990 to 1997 Deputy Director of the High Energy Synchrotron Source ( synchrotron radiation source ).

From 1986 to 1987 he was head of the solid state physics department of the American Physical Society (APS) . In 1976 he was made a Fellow of the APS. He has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1997 .

His textbook of solid state physics with N. David Mermin is a standard work.
