Necronym

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A necronym is a reference to the name of a deceased person. Many cultures have taboos and traditions related to the passing on of names. There are many ways to deal with such a name. It is possible that such a name will be mentioned in excess and constantly, to the point of absolute prohibition of pronouncing it. In the latter case, paraphrases or nicknames are usually given for the person concerned. In some cases, however, it is also possible for material goods to be named after the deceased in order to enable their commemoration.

In some cultures it is common to name a newborn after someone who has recently died, in others extensive rituals and waiting times are necessary before an ancestral name can be given again. In some cultures, such a name is sometimes even completely excluded from being passed on. For example, each Chinese emperor used an individual throne name.
