La Coba necropolis

The La Coba necropolis is an archaeological site in the Sierra de Ávila , near the source of the Rio Almar , on the AV-120 road between Muñana and Muñico , at the pass of Puerto de las Fuentes and the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Las Fuentes , south of San Juan del Olmo , in the province of Avila in Spain .

Although there is uncertainty about the importance and use of this necropolis , it is possible that it was a Christian cemetery of small, more or less isolated communities between the 8th and 10th centuries. The lack of grave goods , pottery, and skeletal remains make dating difficult, with the area having been in use since the Bronze Age . The Visigothic or medieval origin of the necropolis is widespread . The archaeological site can be divided into four separate zones. The tombs of the necropolis, also known as Tumba rupestres or Tumbas visigoticas , have a rectangular, trapezoidal and spindle-shaped shape of the “bathtub” type, but not anthropomorphic .
