The Nelson Island ( Arabic جزيرة جريشة, Gaziret Dusuqi , DMG Jazīrat Disūqī ) is an uninhabited, approximately 315 meters long island 3.5 km northeast of Abukir , Egypt. It is named after Horatio Nelson . The island reaches a height of nine meters and has a lighthouse .
In 2000, the Egyptologist Paolo Gallo and a team led by Nick Slope, chairman of the Nelson Society, excavated the island and found graves from 1798 and 1801. In 2005, the human remains, including the skeletons of 32 people, including sailors, soldiers, one Wife and three children, as well as by Captain James Russel, commander of HMS Ceres, transferred to the Military and War Memorial Cemetery Al-Shatby in Alexandria . The finds showed that women also served on board the British warships.
