The Bay of Aboukir ( Arabic خليج أبو قير) is a spacious bay on the Egyptian Mediterranean coast , which lies northeast of Alexandria between the Rosetta estuary of the Nile and the city of Abukir .
The ancient cities of Canopus , Herakleion and Menouthis are submerged in the water of the bay . In 1798 the naval battle at Abukir between the British Royal Navy and the Navy of the First French Republic took place here.
There is a natural gas field in the bay that was discovered in the 1970s.
