Rosette or Rosetta ( Arabic رشيد Raschīd , DMG Rašīd ) is a port city in the Nile Delta in the governorate of al-Buhaira in Egypt . It is located on the western branch of the Nile , west of the Bay of Abukir . The famous Rosette Stone was found in 1799 in Fort St. Julien, now Fort Rosette, seven kilometers north-north-west of the city.

history

Rosette was founded in 870 and is located on the site of the old Bolbitine . In the Middle Ages the city was an important port, but had to give up its position to Alexandria in the 19th century . Today Rosette is a center of the food , tobacco and textile industries .

Cityscape and landmarks

The city has barely grown in the last two centuries, which has resulted in many town houses from the 17th to 19th centuries that have long characterized the cityscape. Today only 22 of these houses remain, although there were around 40 of them in 1963. These houses are usually four to five storeys high and built of bricks that are joined together like a mosaic , between which antique stone blocks are embedded. In addition, many of these houses have ornate window grilles ( mashrabiyya ).

The Zaghlul Mosque , which was destroyed today, was well worth seeing. It harmoniously connected two older mosques and whose more than 300 columns came from different older buildings.

The preserved fortifications in the north and west of the city date partly from the 16th century.

Population development

At the beginning of the 19th century Rosette is said to have had 35,000 inhabitants, but only 15,000 in 1848. The number of inhabitants rose again to 23,000 by 1927; for the second half of the 20th century, around 40,000 are usually given, after the turn of the millennium the actual population size should be around 70,000.
