Nelson , also known as Old Nelson (born 1763; died 1790), was a horse owned by George Washington . The fox with a broad blaze and white feet was one of the horses he rode during the American Revolutionary Wars , along with Blueskin .

Life

Nelson was born in 1763. It was donated to Washington in 1778. Washington named it after the previous owner Thomas Nelson from Virginia , who presented the horse to him in New York. It was one of Washington’s favorite horses during the American Revolutionary Wars because it didn’t let gun shots unsettle it. After the war he stopped riding horses. Nelson and Blueskin spent their retirement years in Mount Vernon . Nelson died in 1790 at the (for the time) old age of 27. Some sources speak of an accidentally inflicted gunshot wound to his back that is believed to have resulted in his death.

Washington was known as a gifted rider and was accordingly often depicted on the back of one of his horses. Although it is mostly Blueskin in which he can be seen, some pictures with Nelson are also known.
