Nelson Daily News

The Nelson Daily News was a newspaper in Nelson , British Columbia that was discontinued in 2010. Its last owner was Black Press , the largest publisher of weekly newspapers in British Columbia, which also owns the competing weekly Nelson Star .

history

The Daily News was founded in 1902 and existed for 109 years. It served as the newspaper and chronicle for Nelson, which was the smallest community in Canada with a daily newspaper. The daily circulation in 2010 was around 2000 copies, at which point the newspaper was already in financial difficulties.

Black Press acquired Nelson Daily News in July 2010 as part of a larger transaction in which Glacier Media sold several of its British Columbia newspapers, primarily weeklies. Former Black manager Don Kendall also bought the Glacier Dailies in Cranbrook and Kimberley , although Black "was n't that interested in a few titles in Cranbrook, Kimberley, Nelson and Prince Rupert . But Glacier only sold the newspapers as a package."

After Black bought the Nelson Daily News and Prince Rupert Daily News, he closed them a few days later. It already owned competing weeklies in both markets, Nelson Star and The Northern View in Prince Rupert. Rick O'Connor, Black's operations manager, said the Nelson and Prince Rupert newspapers, along with two other weeklies that closed on the same day, lost $ 1 million over the past year. The closure of the Nelson Daily News resulted in 25 layoffs.

After the Nelson Daily News was closed, Black Press hired former editor Bob Hall to run the Nelson Star , which increased its frequency from weekly to twice weekly.

Black bought Don Kendall's Daily Townsman and Daily Bulletin a year later, promising that both "would continue to operate according to their current business plan and that few changes were expected from Black."
