Glacier Media Inc. ( Spelling : GLACIER MEDIA GROUP ) is a Canadian, publicly owned publisher of daily newspapers in British Columbia and weekly newspapers , business magazines and information products for the business community throughout Western Canada . The company is based in Vancouver . The company is also a co-owner of four other newspaper publishers.

history

Although the company currently focuses solely on media and databases, Glacier was a bottled water beverage retailer for the first ten years from 1988 to 1997. Initially the name “Cambridge Resources Ltd.” was used from March 23, 1988 to December 1, 1991. It was followed by the name “Selkirk Springs International Corp.” until October 23, 1995 and “Canadian Glacier Beverage Corporation” until October 25, 1995. August 1997. At the end of August 1997 the company changed its name to Glacier Ventures International Corp. , and it sold the water business the following year. Glacier Media got its current name in 2008. In the early 2000s, the company invested in some agricultural and business publications, and entered the general newspaper business in early 2004 through the acquisition of Boundary Publishers Group , a weekly newspaper chain in Saskatchewan . This was followed by three more purchases (Pasquia Publishing, Weyburn Review, and Pennand Inc. ) over the next twelve months , making it the largest weekly publisher in the province.

Glacier continued its expansion in the holding of local newspapers in 2005/2006. It gained control of Madison Publishing Group, including the Vancouver business and some suburban Vancouver weeklies, as well as some former Hollinger Inc. holdings , including a 50 percent stake in the Great West chain of weeklies in Alberta , the complete takeover of several weeklies in British Columbia, and Glacier's first daily newspaper in British Columbia and Quebec . Hollinger's assets also included a number of industry publications, adding to Glacier’s commercial information portfolio, including Western Producer and the Daily Oil Bulletin . In total, Glacier paid approximately $ 180 million for Hollinger's former assets.

Later in 2006, Glacier partnered with David Radler , a former Hollinger Inc. executive, to sell Quebeck Holding's only Sherbrooke-based newspaper chain, The Record . Glacier received a 50% (later 59%) stake in Radler's privately owned Alta Newspaper Group .

In the following months, investments were made in two other companies that were connected to Radler: Continental Newspapers Ltd. , a publisher of three daily newspapers in British Columbia and Ontario , and RISN Operations , a chain of three daily newspapers and a few weeklies in Rhode Island , United States . In mid-2008, Glacier owned 27.6% and 50% of the shares in these companies, respectively. Continental Newspaper Ltd. is the successor to Horizon Operations Canada , a company owned by Radler. His daughter, Melanie, is President of RISN Operations .

In mid-2010, Black Press , the largest weekly newspaper publisher in British Columbia, bought eleven Glacier newspapers to supplement its own weeklies, including the Nelson Daily News and the Prince Rupert Daily News , both of which Black immediately discontinued. The sale also included the Trail Daily Times and several weeklies in the Kootenays area of British Columbia. Glacier also sold the Cranbrook Daily Townsman and the Kimberley Daily Bulletin to an independent buyer who in turn sold them to Black a year later.

Glacier acquired its largest newspaper, the Times Colonist, in Victoria , British Columbia, in 2011 as part of a $ 86.5 million transfer. The deal, which also included two other daily newspapers and 20 weeklies formerly held by the Postmedia Network , cemented Glacier's position as one of the leading newspaper publishers in British Columbia, even though Postmedia daily newspapers were not part of the trade.
