Black Press Group Ltd. is a Canadian - and privately owned - publisher that publishes popular daily newspapers in Hawaii and Ohio in the United States, as well as a number of non-daily newspapers in Alberta and British Columbia , Canada and Washington state . Black Press is based in Victoria, British Columbia .

He is currently managed by David Holmes Black (unrelated to Canadian-born media mogul Conrad Black ) who is also the majority shareholder in the company. Torstar, who publishes the Toronto Star and was a former employee of David Black, owns 20% of the company .

history

After David Holmes Black had worked as a junior business analyst for the Toronto Star , he acquired the Williams Lake Tribune in Williams Lake, British Columbia from his father Alan in 1975 . He then bought a family-run newspaper near Ashcroft in 1979 . In the years that followed, his stake in ownership expanded exponentially. Although Black Press had primarily focused its acquisitions on building a provincial network of local newspapers in British Columbia and followed a similar approach across the border in Washington State ("Sound Publishing"), the company also invested in " individual marquee daily products ”. In 2000, Black Press bought the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in Hawaii (this was later merged with the rival Honolulu Advertiser , which Black bought in 2010). In 2006 the company acquired the Akron Beacon Journal , the former flagship of Knight Ridder in northeast Ohio.

On June 27, 2007, Black Press announced a takeover of Osprey Media for $ 405 million , in a bidding competition with Quebecor Media . Later, however, Quebecor made a higher offer, which eventually came into the possession of Osprey.

In 2011, David Black was one of several veterans of the newspaper industry who joined forces as investors to invest in the San Francisco Newspaper Company . The aim was to purchase Hearst Corporation's former flagship product, The San Francisco Examiner , which is currently a free daily newspaper. Although this transaction was reported as a purchase of Black Press, David Black also participated as a private investor, so his shares are separate from those of Black Press.

In 2013, there were between Black Press and the company Glacier Media Inc . in an exchange deal with four local British Columbia newspapers. This led to the discontinuation of the Abbotsford Times. In 2014, Black Press negotiated a deal with Glacier Media Inc. that went into effect in March 2015, swapping a dozen British Columbia newspapers in an effort to reorganize the ownership of competing local newspapers in Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland . Black Press received Harbor City Star, Cowichan Citizen, Parksville Oceanside Star, Tofino / Ucluelet Westerly News, Comox Valley Echo, Campbell River Courier, Surrey Now, and Langley Advance.

Controversy

The Nisga'a Treaty editorials

In 1998, owner David Black directed his British Columbia newspapers to publish a series of editorials opposing the Nisga'a Treaty, one of the first modern treaties in British Columbia's history. Editorials in favor of the agreement could not be published.

In January 1999, the NDP government filed a complaint against Black Press with the BC Press Council. The publisher's policy would represent a breach of duty, as it would not act in the public interest and thus violate the press code. Black Press replied that the coverage would not have been affected and the editors would have been free to post their opinions on their pages.

The Press Council agreed with the Press Council's argument that their newspapers “in fact published the most diverse opinions on the Nisga'a Treaty, including those of Prime Minister Glen Clark , Liberal leader Gordon Campbell , and Reform Party President Bill Vander Zalm , just like that of the common citizen of British Columbia ”.

The advertising affair

In August 2007, an article in Victoria News led to a complaint from an advertiser, which in turn led to the firing or resignation of three senior Black Press employees. The Victoria News -Journalist Brennan Clarke announced the newspaper, after he wrote a story about the sale of cheaper cars in the US, came in followed a complaint from the residents in Victoria car dealer "Dave Wheaton Pontiac Buick GMC". Black Press claimed that the article was not sufficiently weighted and that the reporters and editors should not jeopardize advertising revenues with their stories because those revenues are used to pay their salaries. The company also fired long-time Victoria News editor Keith Norbury, in part because of the complaint, which Black Press's Vancouver Island newsgroup regional editor Brian Lepine resigned in protest.

The Canadian Association of Journalists then publicly questioned the credibility and independence of Victoria News, and that one would wonder how many behind-the-scenes stories Black Press would prevent because of the ad revenue threat.
