Kimberley is a small town in the southeast of the Canadian province of British Columbia . In the language of the resident First Nation of the Kutenai tribe , the city is called k̓ukamaʔnam (meaning: "road that leads down").

The settlement was named in 1896 after the Kimberley Mine in Kimberley (South Africa) . In 1944 it was granted city rights.

The British Columbia Highway 95A runs through Kimberley . Cranbrook / Canadian Rockies International Airport is 20 kilometers southeast of the city .

Between 1917 and 2001, the Sullivan Mine in Kimberley was the world's largest lead and zinc mine.

Demographics

The 2011 census showed that the municipality had a population of 6,652. The city's population has increased by 8.4% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in the province of British Columbia only grew by 7.0%.

Today tourism around the Kimberley Alpine Resort , a winter sports area, and the Kimberley Underground Mining Railway , an underground mining railway with a 230 m long mining exhibition, is the main source of income for the city.

In the city is the "largest free-standing cuckoo clock in Canada".
