The Alberni Valley Times was a Canadian daily newspaper that appeared on weekdays in Port Alberni , Vancouver Island and British Columbia . The newspaper was most recently owned by Black Press , which also published the Nanaimo Daily News on the island (until January 2016) and still publishes some weekly newspapers .
history
The Alberni Valley Times was first published in 1967 and was the result of a merger of the West Coast Advocate (since 1931) and the Twin Cities Times (since 1948). The newspaper appeared for the first time shortly before the formerly independent communities Alberni and Port Alberni were merged into one city. The paper appeared twice a week until September 28, 1970, when the frequency was expanded to five times a week and the format changed. It reached a daily circulation of a little over 8100 copies.
The Alberni Valley Times was initially part of David Radler's "Sterling Newspapers", a newspaper chain in the 1970s, and then became part of the "Southam" newspaper chain when Radler and Conrad Black integrated Southam into the Hollinger Inc. holding . At the time, this chain was owned by the dominant newspaper publisher in British Columbia, and it also included the Nanaimo Daily News, the Times Colonist and several weekly newspapers.
Along with the rest of Southam, ownership of the Vancouver Island Newspapers passed to Canwest in 2000 . As of September 10, 2001, the newspaper was no longer printed in Port Alberni, but in Nanaimo. The next change of ownership followed in 2010, when Postmedia Network took over in 2010.
Postmedia, in turn, sold its stake in Vancouver Island Newspapers and Lower Mainland weeklies in 2011 to Glacier Media for $ 86.5 million. In 2015, Glacier Media sold all of its Vancouver Island newspapers, except the Times Colonist, to Black Press. The paper was discontinued on October 9, 2015. The circulation of the newspaper was 2500 to 3000 copies per day in the last few weeks before the closure, plus 8400 copies of the free weekly edition that appears every Thursday.
