The Nanaimo Daily News was a Canadian daily newspaper that was published in Nanaimo , on Vancouver Island , British Columbia , on weekdays for 141 years until it was discontinued in January 2016 .

The last owner of the newspaper was Black Press , which also published the Alberni Valley Times and currently publishes several other weekly papers on Vancouver Island.

history

George Norris founded the twice-weekly Nanaimo Daily Free Press in 1874 . From 1888 it was published daily. In the late 1990s, the Nanaimo Daily News became part of the Southam chain, which in turn belonged to the Hollinger Inc. holding company . The chain belonged to the leading newspaper publisher in British Columbia at the time, which also published the Alberni Valley Times , the Times Colonist and several other weekly newspapers.

Together with the rest of the Southam newspapers, ownership of the Vancouver Island newspapers passed to Canwest in 2000 , followed by Postmedia Network in 2010 .

Postmedia sold its stake in Vancouver Island Newspapers and Weekly Newspapers on the Lower Mainland to Glacier Media in 2011 for $ 86.5 million .

In 2013, the Nanaimo Daily News became the subject of controversy and was criticized for possible racism for publishing a letter to the publisher directed against the First Nations . Over 100 people including the mayor protested against this publication. Finally, the Nanaimo Daily News apologized for publishing the letter, only to do so again later in the year for a second letter criticizing the First Nations again.

In 2015, Glacier Media sold all of the island's newspapers to Black Press, with the exception of the Times Colonist .

In January 2016, Black Press announced that the Nanaimo Daily News would be discontinued, while the Nanaimo Daily Bulletin , which it owned , would remain.
