The yellow long feeler belongs to the genus Nematopogon from the family of longhorn moths (Adelidae).

features

The yellow long feeler has a yellow-orange head and whitish antennae. Its front wings appear light to straw yellow - possibly with a very faint grid pattern.

Nematopogon swammerdamella has a wingspan of eighteen to twenty-one millimeters, making it the largest among some very similar looking longhorn moths.

Occurrence

The yellow long feeler is widespread in the Palearctic. In Europe up to the Caucasus he lives in sparse deciduous forests.

Nematopogon swammerdamella can be found almost everywhere in Europe. The Balkan Peninsula, Greece, Iceland and Ukraine were not settled by him.

It occurs near or in light forest areas. It can also be discovered on hedges, in the moor or on the heath or in other open biotopes.

Way of life

The yellow long sensor is often only active in the afternoon until dusk.

Nematopogon swammerdamella can be seen in flight at the end of April, May to June . Its caterpillars develop from summer to spring z. B. also on Fagus (beech) or Quercus (oak) and Prunus . There they first mine leaves; later, as older caterpillars, they form a flat sack from pieces of leaf and a web. In this, the caterpillars of the yellow sensor develop on the ground and pupate in it.

On the ground, the caterpillars of Nematopogon swammerdamella probably feed on fallen leaves, as well as on decomposing plant material or herbaceous plants.

In that flat sack made of web like pieces of leaves, the caterpillars of the yellow probe continue to develop on the ground and overwinter twice. Pupation also takes place in it.
