Nendeln is a district of the municipality of Eschen in the Principality of Liechtenstein . The two districts of Eschen and Nendeln form the capital of the Liechtenstein Unterland. With 4413 inhabitants, of which Eschen has 2972 ​​and Nendeln 1441 (as of December 31, 2017), and an area of ​​10.333 km², Eschen is the largest municipality in the Lower Lands.

Nendeln is located east of the Riet, on the flat foot of the slope of the Three Sisters Massif between Nendler Rüfe and Maurer Rüfe, on the eastern edge of the wide Riet area south of the Eschnerberg, on the road and railway line Schaan - Feldkirch . At the top and on both sides (south and northeast) it is framed by forest; the view of the reed and ash is free. The foundations of a Roman villa have been excavated to the east of Nendeln.

In written documents from the 14th to the 18th century, the term “Nendlen” is not used, but rather the term “Nendlen” (cf. the dialect form “Nendla”); in written documents from the 15th and 16th centuries also the form "Endlen" or "Änndlen". There is no reliable knowledge of the origin of the place name «Nendeln». Most linguists see the place name “Nendeln” in connection with the Celtic “Nantu”: “Nantiolon” ​​(valley field) or “Nantuialo” (valley direction). The origin of the Germanic personal name «Nandilo» is unlikely. There are no recent findings from the Germanists or Celtologists.

Economy and Infrastructure

The Hilti Group is represented in Nendeln. There is an art school in Nendeln. The place has a train station on the Feldkirch – Buchs railway line ; As part of the S-Bahn-Liechtenstein project , an expansion of the railway line to a continuous double track from the state border with Austria to south of Nendeln is planned in order to allow a 30-minute interval with improved connection options to long-distance rail transport ( Railjet , Intercity and ÖBB Nightjet ) enable.

Attractions

  • Church of St. Sebastian and Rochus Nendeln. The chapel in Nendeln was built during the plague year 1639 and financed by Wolf and Maria Senti. In 1941 it was canceled. The foundation stone for the new chapel was laid on June 10, 1935. The plans and the painting were made by F. Brutschin from Schwyz. The fragments of the high altar from 1639 are still preserved from the old furnishings.
