The Liechtenstein Parliament and the government have on 13./14. January 1870 the then Vorarlberger Bahn was granted the concession for the construction and operation of a railway line from Feldkirch via Liechtenstein sovereign territory to Buchs ( Switzerland ). The railway line was built from 1870 to 1872 and opened on October 24, 1872. The Nendeln station was opened in 1872, at that time as a stop , together with the Feldkirch – Buchs railway line. Today the operation is incumbent on the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) as legal successor of the Vorarlberger Bahn.

August 27, 1870 - Conclusion of an international treaty between Austria-Hungary (now the Republic of Austria ), Liechtenstein, Bavaria (now the Federal Republic of Germany ) and Switzerland, including the construction of a railway line between Feldkirch and Buchs.

The historic station building in Nendeln has been expanded again and again. 1926/27 z. B. built a customs building and electrified the route. In 1931 the reception building was extended and an apartment was created for the station management .

Due to the slippery slope of the Rhine at Schaan , the railway station and track system was severely affected in Nendeln on 25 September 1927th

The system has hardly been renewed in recent years and the technical facilities are functional, but outdated. The platforms have not been significantly renewed for many years. Around 50 trains frequent Nendeln station every day.

A double-track expansion of the railway line has been under discussion for decades. In this context, the railway line in Liechtenstein is to become more attractive and to be increasingly included in local public transport, see also S-Bahn Vorarlberg, infrastructure measures .

The 18 km long railway line between Feldkirch and Buchs runs nine kilometers through the Principality of Liechtenstein. Nendeln station is the only station in the Principality of Liechtenstein that is still manned by a dispatcher. The crossing point of the single-track line between Feldkirch and Buchs is at Nendeln train station (a second track is available here for the encounter over a length of almost 700 meters).

The handling of goods at Nendeln station has continuously declined over the past decades and currently only wood is delivered and loaded.

Nendeln train station is very well connected to the Liechtenstein bus network.

On its journey from Vienna to Zurich HB, the ÖBB Railjet passes Nendeln station without stopping.

As part of the local transport project S-Bahn-Liechtenstein, the continuous double-track expansion of the Feldkirch - Buchs SG railway line is planned in order to enable a S-Bahn-like operation.
