Nene Valley Color Coated Ware
|
Nene Valley Color Coated Ware (also Castor Ware ; often abbreviated as NVCC ) is a type of Romano-British ceramic found in the lower valley of the River Nene in the vicinity of Durobrivae (now Water Newton in England ). The finds date from the middle of the 2nd century to the 4th century AD.
Manufacturing
Pottery production in the area began in the middle of the 1st century BC. The first workshops are associated with the Roman military camp near Longthorpe . The manufacturing facilities expanded several miles along the Nene Valley between Wansford and Peterborough in the 2nd century . The center was near the Roman city of Durobrivae. Other workshops were at Stibbington , Sibson-cum-Stibbington , Chesterton , Yaxley , and Stanground .
structure
The NVCC ceramic is a hard, smoothly textured body with fine, irregular hairline cracks . Usually the pieces are painted white to off-white. The engobe (casting compound) is dark brown or black, sometimes speckled orange. The emaciation consists of very fine quartz sand , red or orange and black sprinkles and occasionally pale pieces of clay.
Shape and ornament
NVCC vessels have a characteristic repertoire of shapes and decorations. The most common shape are cups, both with bead-shaped edges and in the form of a bag. Where there is decoration, barbotine (slip painting , above and below the glaze), punctures and grooves occur. At the beginning there are some hunting scenes in barbotine design, while the objects from the third century tend to have a spiral pattern.
