Nenggai zhai manlu

The brush notes with the title Nenggai zhai manlu ( Chinese  能 改 齋 漫 錄  /  能 改 斋 漫 录 , Pinyin Nénggǎi zhāi mànlù  - “ Casual notes from the studio of changeability ”) were made by Wu Zeng (吴 曾, bl. 1127–1160 ) written during the Southern Song Dynasty . The work consisted of 20 booklets (juan).

Content (selection)

The content is divided into 13 subject groups:

  • Beginning of things (shìshǐ 事 始)
  • Correction of errors (biànwù 辨 误)
  • Incidents (shìshí 事实)
  • Geography (dìlǐ 地理)
  • Discussions (yìlùn 议论)
  • Yuefu seals (yuèfǔ 乐府)

etc.

Often it is text-critical investigations. It contains a great deal of literary historical material from the Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty .

Eating and drinking culture

The book is also an important source on the history of Chinese food and drink culture, particularly the Tang and Song dynasties.

Qin Hui

However, the author was dependent on the politician Qín Huì (秦 桧 / 秦 檜) (1090–1155), in the book many facts are turned upside down and the office of Qin Hui is glorified.

Lost chapters

Today's edition consists of 18 booklets (juan), a humorous section (“huīxié tánxuè 诙谐 谈 谑”) has already been lost.

Old prints and modern editions

The work is contained in many old book collections ( congshu ) and also in the book series on Chinese eating and drinking culture called Zhongguo pengren guji congkan . A modern, corrected and punctuated edition was published in 1979 by Shanghai guji chubanshe (上海 古籍 出版社), which contains text passages collected from books from the Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty and from the Yongle dadian encyclopedia (永乐大典).
