Distribution map of the Yellow Striped Hussar

The yellow-striped hussar lives as the only representative of the (non- monophyletic ) genus Neoniphon in the waters off Florida and in the Caribbean. It occurs there from a depth of 20 meters and can occasionally still be observed at a depth of 70 meters. He lives shy and hidden and prefers to stay on dark reef spots.

The yellow-striped hussar (like other hussar fish) can make noises. To do this, muscles are contracted; the swim bladder serves as an acoustic amplifier. These sounds can be heard when the fish feels threatened and defended.
