Nepalese in Austria

The Nepalese in Austria are citizens of Nepalese origin in Austria , mostly temporary expatriates , refugees, but also some permanent residents - together with their descendants born there.

A total of 1250 Nepalese live in Austria. Most of them live in the capital Vienna and speak Austrian German and Nepali . The religion of most Austrian Nepalese is either Hinduism or Buddhism , in addition there have recently been some Muslims among the Nepalese in Austria.

Some Nepalese who live in Austria are asylum seekers and refugees, many of them Lhotshampas (Bhutanese Nepalese), who were expelled from Bhutan , or refugees as victims of the conflict between Maoists and the Nepalese army leadership. Not all of them want to give up their identity in favor of the Austrian. Due to the freedom within the Schengen states , it is also difficult to determine their exact number, which is likely to be higher than the official ones.

There are about 150 university students from Nepal. Around 100 Nepalese citizens live permanently in Austria. This also includes international artists and composers.
