Neptis frobenia is on Mauritius occurring butterfly ( butterfly ) from the family of Nymphalidae (Nymphalidae).

The moths reach a wingspan of 40 to 44 millimeters, with the females being slightly larger than the males. There is no sexual dimorphism . In both sexes, the basic wing color is brown to black-brown. A yellow band extends through the postdiscal region of both pairs of wings and is interrupted twice on the forewings. The underside of the forewing shows the drawing of the upper side in a weakened form, the underside of the hindwings is colored light brown and has an indistinct whitish semicircular narrow stripe.

Similar species

Since Neptis frobenia is the only kingfisher species (Limenitidinae) found in Mauritius , it cannot be confused with other animals of this subfamily .

distribution and habitat

Neptis frobenia is endemic to Mauritius. It is not native to Madagascar . The species prefers to colonize bush and forest edge vegetation in hilly areas in the southwest of the island.

Way of life

The moths fly in two generations, mainly in February, September and November. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of nettle leaf species ( Acalypha ) as well as Erythrospermum mauritiana and Terminalia bentzoe . Details on the species' way of life have yet to be researched.
