Neri di Antonio Neri (also Neri d'Antonio ) was an Italian painter who worked in Florence between 1392/94 and 1399/1400 .

Life

Little is known about Neri di Antonio Neri. He first appeared in the years between 1392 and 1394, where he is documented as a compagno of the painter Agnolo Gaddi and apparently supported him in the work on the frescoes for the Cappella del Sacro Cingolo in the cathedral of Prato . Since its possible share in the production can no longer be recognized today, it can be assumed that Neri knew how to adapt to Agnolo's style. Possibly he was his student for a while and later worked in his workshop.

After Agnolo's death, Neri seems to have taken over his workshop, because in November 1396 he enrolled in the Florentine artists' guild Arte, the Medici e Speziali . In 1399/1400 he and Spinello Aretino accepted the order to equip the main choir chapel of Santa Felicita in Florence, whereby he was responsible for the execution of the frescoes that are now lost. He died before the work was completed.

The artist

Since Neri seems to have been at the beginning of his artistic activity, he probably created only a few independent works. None of these can be assigned to him with certainty. Recently, Anneke de Vries suggested assigning him the so-called Carmine polyptych , painted around 1395 , whose preserved panels are now scattered in various collections. It is the central panel with the depiction of Mary Enthroned with the Child (Toledo / Ohio, Toledo Museum of Art - Inv.-No .: 76), the four wing paintings with Saints Jerome , John the Baptist , Peter and Paul (Florence, Depots of the Florentine Galleries - Inv.-No .: 8705, 8708, 8709, 8704) and five panels of the Predella: Saint Jerome (whereabouts unknown - formerly Privy Councilor Joseph Cremer's collection in Dortmund), The young John the Baptist in the desert (Leicester, Leicestershire Museum and Art Gallery - Inv.-No .: 33 A), The Birth of Christ (Berlin, Gemäldegalerie - Inv.-No .: 1113), The Martyrdom of St. Peter (Baltimore, Walters Art Museum - Inv.-No .: 37.688) and The Martyrdom of St. Paul (Princeton, University Art Museum - Inv.-No .: 36–23). Currently, despite a number of stylistic differences from his other works, with the exception of Anneke de Vries and Marvin Eisenberg , the majority of the panels are still regarded as works by Lorenzo Monaco .
