Agnolo Gaddi (* around 1350 in Florence ; † October 16, 1396 ibid) was an Italian painter .

Life

Agnolo Gaddi was the son of the painter Taddeo Gaddi , from whom he also received his first artistic lessons. The painter Gaddo Gaddi was his grandfather. From an early age, in order to earn a living, Gaddi had to do a commercial job alongside his artistic vocation.

In the Chapel of the Mariae Belt in Prato , he portrayed the story of Mary and the legend of her belt in frescoes. Gaddi decorated the Franciscan Church of Santa Croce in Florence with frescoes depicting the finding of the cross. Altar paintings by him are in the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, in the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella (Florence) and the Church of Santo Spirito . In the years 1381-1387 he made drawings for figures at the Loggia de 'Signori ( Loggia dei Lanzi ) and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore , which were executed in marble.

In the last years of his life, Gaddi was hardly an artist, but almost exclusively as a merchant. However, between 1392 and 1395 he and his brother Giovanni accepted some commissioned works from Pope Urban V in the Vatican , which are no longer preserved today. The painter died on October 16, 1396 in Florence at the age of about 45.
