The Amalienfelsen , until 1841 Bleifelsen or Blaufelsen or Bräufelsen , is a 29 meter high rock directly on the right bank of the Danube in the “ Princely Park ” near Inzigkofen in the Baden-Württemberg district of Sigmaringen . It takes its name from the princess Amalie Zephyrine von Hohenzollern (1760–1841).

The Amalienfelsen is located in the district of Inzigkofen. It is part of the Princely Park and property of the Princely House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen , but freely accessible to everyone.

The bottleneck of the Danube valley at the Amalienfelsen forms the exit of the Danube breakthrough through the Swabian Alb, which is 40 kilometers upstream at Beuron .

Size and description

The colored postcard from 1905 shows the Amalienfelsen with inscription and coat of arms and the Hermitage on the other side of the Danube with the Meinradskapelle.

On the west side, the rock is washed around six meters deep by the water. Measured at the normal water level of the Danube , this limestone rock from the White Jurassic period rises approx. 29 meters above the water level . It is located at 605 meters above sea level, 113 meters lower than the source of the Danube in Donaueschingen .

On the vertical wall on the river side there is an inscription made of cast iron letters: "In memory of Amalie Zephyrine 1841" and the alliance coat of arms of the princess who died in 1841.

The Amalienfelsen has been designated as a geotope worthy of protection by the State Office for Geology, Raw Materials and Mining in Freiburg ( LGRB ) .

history

After her return from Paris, Inzigkofen was the favorite place of residence of Princess Amalie Zephyrine von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. The park was laid out on her initiative and according to her personal ideas. She has always been a generous benefactress to the poor sections of the population from Inzigkofen and has significantly promoted the local village school, hence the inscription on the rock in memory of this princess. In the vernacular , the name of the limestone rock soon changed from "Blaufelsen" to "Amalienfelsen".
