Nerve sheath tumors are tumors that presumably originate from cells in the medullary sheaths and soft tissues surrounding the nerves . The most common benign nerve sheath tumor is the neurinoma . Neurofibromas , perineuriomas, and nerve sheath myxomas are less common . A malignant nerve sheath tumor is the malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST).

Nerve sheath tumors can occur sporadically or (more rarely) in connection with genetic diseases such as neurofibromatosis type 1 , neurofibromatosis type 2 , familial schwannomatosis and the Carney complex .
