A schwannoma (synonym: neurinoma , benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor, BPNST) is a benign and usually slowly growing tumor of the peripheral nervous system that originates from the Schwann cells , whose job it is to encase nerve fibers. As it grows, pain and paralysis of the affected nerves can occur. The acoustic neuroma , a so-called cerebellar bridge angle tumor , is an example of a schwannoma. There is no connection to neurofibromatosis type 1 .

Therapy consists of surgical removal ( resection ) or radiation . This is followed by a histopathological examination of the surgical specimen under the light microscope ( histology ). If a schwannoma occurs in the auditory or equilibrium nerve , it is called an acoustic neuroma (actually a vestibular schwannoma ). This occurs more frequently and often on both sides in neurofibromatosis type 2 .
