Ness Yole

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ness Yole , also known as Shetland Yole , is a small, British type of fishing sailboat.

history

The boat type was used for inland fishing in the Shetland Islands . The beginning of its period of use goes back to the period from the late 9th century to the middle of the 15th century, when the Shetlands were part of Norwegian territory. Due to the lack of wood in the Shetland Islands, complete kits of the boats were imported from Norway. By the end of the century, the boat type had largely been replaced by more modern boats.

Construction

The open and relatively slim boats are reminiscent of the construction of long boats . As with the models, the ribs are only attached to the keel . The wooden hull of the work gliders, made in clinker construction, is pointed fore and aft. Due to the single center-mounted mast with lugsail , the boats have no bowsprit or other overhangs. A tiller handle is used for steering .
