Ness of Sound is a peninsula to the east of Mainland , the main island of the Shetlands . It is located southwest of the island's capital Lerwick and south of the town of Sound . Ness of Sound extends over a length of about 1500 meters with a width of about 500 meters. The peninsula separates two bays in the North Sea , Brei Wick in the east and Voe of Sound in the west. On the east coast are the remains of coastal artillery from 1940. They are designated as a Scheduled Monument and are therefore a listed building .
