The formerly independent municipality of Nettelburg has been a district of Leer since the municipal and territorial reform of January 1, 1973 . It is located south of the Leda about 2.5 kilometers from the city center. Until the end of 1991 Nettelburg had its own local council. The former municipality had 120 inhabitants in 1925. This number went back to 95 residents by 1939.
