Network Driver Interface Specification

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Network Driver Interface Specification ( NDIS ) is a standard developed by Microsoft and 3Com for the integration of network cards . It allows the operation of several cards in one PC as well as the use of several protocols on one network card . The actual card driver is the MAC driver. NDIS is used under Windows, in contrast to ODI , which is required for Apple. Under Linux it is possible to load the NDIS drivers from Windows using the Ndiswrapper . FreeBSD also offers corresponding support for using Windows drivers to operate network adapters.

NDIS WAN

The Network Driver Interface Specification for Wide Area Networks is a Microsoft extension for wide area networks such as B. the Internet.

The NDIS-WAN driver of an ISDN or ADSL controller enables the controller to be used as a WAN adapter via the dial-up network.

The following NDIS versions have been implemented:

With the Windows versions from Windows 2000 onwards, the NDIS-WAN driver is automatically installed with the respective device driver of the ISDN or ADSL controller. With older Windows versions (Windows 95/98 / Me), however, the NDIS WAN driver must also be installed if necessary by adding a VPN adapter in the network configuration.

The full support of installations with several active ISDN controllers via the dial-up network is only ensured by the CoNDIS WAN CAPI drivers integrated in the respective CAPI drivers. CoNDIS is a further development of the NDIS standard. CoNDIS drivers are to replace the NDIS drivers in all future Microsoft operating systems.
