Network Driver Interface Specification
The Network Driver Interface Specification ( NDIS ) is a standard developed by Microsoft and 3Com for the integration of network cards . It allows the operation of several cards in one PC as well as the use of several protocols on one network card . The actual card driver is the MAC driver. NDIS is used under Windows, in contrast to ODI , which is required for Apple. Under Linux it is possible to load the NDIS drivers from Windows using the Ndiswrapper . FreeBSD also offers corresponding support for using Windows drivers to operate network adapters.
NDIS WAN
The Network Driver Interface Specification for Wide Area Networks is a Microsoft extension for wide area networks such as B. the Internet.
The NDIS-WAN driver of an ISDN or ADSL controller enables the controller to be used as a WAN adapter via the dial-up network.
The following NDIS versions have been implemented:
- NDIS 2.0: MS-DOS , Windows for Workgroups 3.1 , OS / 2
- NDIS 3.0: Windows for Workgroups 3.11
- NDIS 3.1: Windows 95
- NDIS 4.0: Windows 95 OSR2, NT 4.0 , Windows CE 3.0
- NDIS 5.0: Windows 98 , 98 SE, Me , 2000
- NDIS 5.1: Windows XP , Server 2003 , Windows CE 4.x, 5.0, 6.0
- NDIS 5.2: Windows Server 2003 SP2
- NDIS 6.0: Windows Vista
- NDIS 6.1: Windows Vista SP1, Server 2008 , Windows Embedded Compact 7, Windows Embedded Compact 2013
- NDIS 6.20: Windows 7 , Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
- NDIS 6.30: Windows 8 , Windows Server 2012
- NDIS 6.40: Windows 8.1 , Windows Server 2012 R2
- NDIS 6.50: Windows 10
- NDIS 6.60: Windows Server 2016
With the Windows versions from Windows 2000 onwards, the NDIS-WAN driver is automatically installed with the respective device driver of the ISDN or ADSL controller. With older Windows versions (Windows 95/98 / Me), however, the NDIS WAN driver must also be installed if necessary by adding a VPN adapter in the network configuration.
The full support of installations with several active ISDN controllers via the dial-up network is only ensured by the CoNDIS WAN CAPI drivers integrated in the respective CAPI drivers. CoNDIS is a further development of the NDIS standard. CoNDIS drivers are to replace the NDIS drivers in all future Microsoft operating systems.
