Media gateway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A media gateway is a gateway that is used in telecommunications, among other things, in Next Generation Networks (NGN) and in IP telephony .

The gateway (engl. Gateway ) converts this digital voice, audio or video information, collectively referred to as in the English language media designated by a network type in a different order. The data can also be transcoded here .

For example, a media gateway can terminate the basic ISDN channels locally and convert the voice services transmitted via them into RTP media streams for an IP -based packet-oriented network. In the opposite direction, it executes the reverse conversion at the same time - it works in full duplex .

Multimedia data streams, also known as media streams , often contain a combination of audio, video and T.120 media. A media gateway is able to implement any combination of these media and it can also handle conferences of several participants.

The entire gateway, which enables the different network types to be interconnected, consists of the media gateway, the media gateway controller and the signaling gateway . The concept formation is not yet completed here. The signaling gateway is often referred to as a soft switch (as of 2004/2005), while in older literature the entire system of media and signaling functions is referred to as a soft switch.
