Located in North Rhine-Westphalia nationwide established network interface NRW (German Chemical Industry Association eV Landesverband Nordrhein-Westfalen) connects businesses, economic development organizations and universities from all levels of the value chain. The surface network NRW started in autumn 2009 on the initiative of the regional business development company WiN Emscher-Lippe GmbH under the umbrella of ChemSite , the German Research Association for Surface Treatment (DFO) and the Technologieförderung Münster GmbH (TFM). The basis was the great potential in the area of ​​surface technology at the NRW location, which is strongly represented in the entire state, especially in the Ruhr area, due to its industrial history. In the first five years, the network was mainly financed by funds from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the European Fund for Regional Development . After the funding expired, several partners set it on a new footing in October 2014 in the form of an association so that the work can be secured in the long term through membership fees.

The idea of ​​the network is to link the actors involved in the entire value chain of surface technology: from raw material manufacturers, paint and adhesive formulations to the broad field of user industries to plant engineering, service companies, universities and scientific institutes. One objective of the network is to strengthen the ability to innovate by accelerating the transfer of knowledge and technology to the market and increasing public funds for research and development projects. Another idea is to promote international competitiveness: for example through information events, new business contacts and collaborations and the development of sustainable structures. The network has developed the surface atlas NRW as an essential instrument. It lists companies and institutions in the fields of contract coaters, raw materials and semi-finished products, systems and peripherals, research and development and service providers.
