history

Since 1868, meetings of the then General Christian Apostolic Mission (later the New Apostolic Church ) have been held in Coswig (Anhalt) . The founder of the congregation was the Coswig basket maker and later Bishop Franz Huebner , who had already committed himself to the Catholic-Apostolic congregations in Hamburg in 1860 . After he founded several churches in Holland in 1863 as a mission evangelist, he returned to his hometown Coswig in 1866 and held his first meetings. The church grew rapidly, and in the years that followed, many new churches sprang up in the area thanks to the abundant evangelism activity of the members.

After the death of the apostle Carl Wilhelm Louis Preuss , the Coswig congregation adhered to the apostles Friedrich Wilhelm Schwarz , Menkhoff and Krebs and became an apostolic congregation.

In 1881 the Christian-religious association in Coswig was founded. This made it possible to hold official meetings. Four years later, the first community-owned chapel in Central Germany was built in Coswig, which was inaugurated on August 30, 1885.

From 1888 Coswig was also the district parish of the newly founded church district of Coswig. In 1893, District Elder Franz Huebner was charged with interpreting the word and holding church services without studying. After several negotiations, he won the process, and the New Apostolic Church of Saxony-Anhalt , with its chairman Franz Huebner, was recognized by the state. In 1901 Franz Huebner was given the office of bishop, which he held until his retirement in 1911. The later Bishop Carl Knape took over the office.

In the following years the parish and district grew, so that the Coswig district was divided into several new church districts. In the 1980s, the district municipality was relocated to the neighboring town of Dessau.

The current striking church building of the New Apostolic Congregation was consecrated on November 29, 1925 because the chapel built in 1885 was too small. The architect was the master builder Dorn from Coswig. The nave is nine meters wide, 24 meters long and eight meters high. It has a wooden gallery on which a pipe organ was installed in 1954, which is still playing today, slightly modified. Architecturally interesting is the apse, which is atypical for New Apostolic church buildings, as well as the basket roof arch and the colorful stained glass windows. The organ window on the gable side facing the main street shows an English four-leaf clover. The entrance to the church is via a wide open staircase through a canopy supported by columns.

After the extensive renovation in 2002, the church now has several usable rooms on the lower floor for child and youth care, gatherings as well as a kitchen, modern toilets and the sacristy. With the renovation, the building also experienced a dismantling to the approximately original state of 1925, as the church was built with additional walls and cladding in the 1950s and 1980s. The Potsdam architect Manuel Felix Köhler, who is also responsible for the modern color scheme, carried out the planning and construction management.
