New Styrian Dances

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neue Steierische Tänze is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 61). The work was first performed on December 26, 1848, in Dommayers Casino in Hietzing.

Remarks

The waltz appeared after the overthrow of the revolution of 1848. Strauss was suspicious of the authorities because of his sympathy for the revolution. He was therefore careful with the performance of his works and initially avoided pieces that might arouse suspicion in connection with the revolution. It is not known whether the composer visited Styria at any time, but in this work he musically processed local themes from there. The waltz does not seem to have had any lasting success. Only a piano edition and an (incomplete) version of the orchestral parts have survived. The recording mentioned below was arranged by Kapellmeister Christian Pollack on the basis of these templates .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 6 minutes and 47 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
