New Synagogue (Potsdam)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Behind the New Synagogue in Potsdam is the construction of a new synagogue in the city center there for the three local Jewish religious communities . It is to be erected there on Schloßstraße, opposite the film museum .

For this purpose, the state of Brandenburg is providing the property on which an office building for the Potsdam water management company stood between 1971 and 2011 and which has been fallow since then.

The construction association Neue Synagoge Potsdam eV has estimated costs of five million euros. The state of Brandenburg is implementing the project as a state construction measure. In order to enable the rapid implementation, the state is financing the measure in advance. Ultimately, however, the construction and operation of the synagogue should be supported by donations and own funds from a supporting foundation, the establishment of which is currently being prepared. An EU-wide architectural competition for the New Synagogue and an adjoining community center was started at the end of October 2008. More than 150 architectural offices showed interest in designing the new synagogue. After an initial selection, 30 offices remained, of which 26 contributed with specific designs. The jury selected three winners and three purchases from these 26 designs. According to the recommendation of the jury, the design by the Berlin architects Haberland, which was awarded 1st prize in 2009, serves as the basis for building planning. On October 1, 2010, the building permit was issued for the revised design.

The building faces the challenge of fitting into the historically sensitive urban space between the new and old market and was originally supposed to be completed by April 14, 2012, the 20th anniversary of the Brandenburg constitution . However, construction could never be started because the municipalities involved could not approve the submitted building draft, so the state government imposed a project stop in 2011.

In November 2018, the Brandenburg Minister of Culture Martina Münch (SPD) as well as Ud Joffe from the Synagogue Community of Potsdam and Mikhail Tkach from the Jewish Community of Potsdam signed an agreement on the establishment, sponsorship and operation of the center. After the parties involved agreed in principle on a draft in April 2020, construction is now to begin around spring 2021, and it will be completed in 2023.Template: future / in 2 years
