The new bridge gate was part of the city fortifications of the city of Magdeburg and belonged to the facilities of the fortress Magdeburg .

location

The gate served as access to the city for the traffic flowing over the river bridge over the Elbe . This Elbe bridge, built in 1862, and with it the New Bridge Gate, were located a little north of today's Neue Strombrücke on the western bank of the Elbe and secured access to the Elbe Bridge on the city side. The gate was almost a direct extension of Johannisbergstrasse in the direction of the Elbe.

history

The gate was built around 1860 as part of the construction of a new river bridge to replace the old bridge gate further south . Since the new bridge built in 1862 was located a little north of the old bridge, it was also necessary to replace the gate. The gate was designed as an open passage and was covered by casemates .

The gate was never involved in military conflicts. When the fortress was abandoned in 1912 at the latest, the gate lost its military importance. After 1945 the gate was demolished. Another new construction of the river bridge, which was destroyed in the Second World War , a little to the south, also destroyed the pure gate function.
