Old bridge gate
The old bridge gate was part of the historic fortifications of the city of Magdeburg and was part of the Magdeburg fortress .
location
The gate served as access to the city for the traffic flowing over the river bridge over the Elbe . The medieval Elbe bridge and with it the Brückor were located a little south of today's Neue Strombrücke on the western bank of the Elbe and secured city-side access to what was then the only Elbe bridge in the region.
history
The gate was built in the 13th century as a typical medieval city gate with a tower and gatehouse as one of the first six city gates. It was first mentioned in a document in 1424. At the beginning of the 16th century, the gate was reinforced with a roundabout .
In 1862 a new river bridge was built, located north of the old one and also north of the current one, in a direct extension of Johannisbergstrasse . The old bridge gate lost its function and was replaced by the new bridge gate built further north from 1860 . However, this gate no longer exists today either.
For many years the naming of a street as Am Alten Brückor reminded of the gate. However, the street was abandoned after the city was rebuilt after the destruction in the Second World War , which did not adhere to the historical urban structure . The entrance to the Alleecenter shopping center at this point today is unnamed.
